Souls – Created in November 2022

Old Irish saying “Butterflies are souls of the dead waiting to pass through Purgatory”

This is a particularly meaningful image to me as the idea came to me on same week a member of my family was taken to hospital. Not knowing that we would be losing them later that week, I sketch this image in my book.

In Irish folklore the butterfly is attributed as the soul and thus it has the ability to cross into the otherworld, and when I drew the bird, I knew at once I wanted it to be a lovebird wanting to be reunited with it’s love, watching for it’s soulmate to crossover.

I found out later that this person and their wife were nicknamed the lovebirds, which made this image more significant and special to me.

Intuition plays a big part in my life and my art is usually influenced by it. I have no problem if people believe it is just a coincidence but to me it is a source of inspiration.

This is a short video journal of the making of my image Souls, a wee peek at my creative journey, I hope you enjoy it and thanks for stopping by.
